Notes on LaTeX (2e, version R5P0, for Textures 1.8) October 10, 1996 (last mod 01/26/97) ***Introduction: Welcome to LaTeX 2e, version R5P0. This is notes on a package built for Textures users which is an easy-to-install, ready-to- run LaTeX set. Many items are not in this set, but are available from the Blue Sky Research ftp server (ftp://ftp.bluesky.com/) or from CTAN (e.g. ftp://ftp.dante.de) or on floppy disk by request for Blue Sky Research customers. What many items? Technical documentation, original *.dtx files, etc. There's *a lot* of LaTeX2e, and you don't wanna see it all at once. *Warning* The PPC half of the format is compiled *for Textures 1.8* and so won't work with PPC 1.7 unless you recompile. There are two versions of the installer file here, one in MacBinary and one in BinHex. Use the MacBinary one if you have Stuffit expander or are using some Mac program (e.g. Fetch) to transfer, as it's smaller. Filename "LaTeX.Installer.ftp.bin". If you're stopping at a Unix account on the way, you might want the binhexed one, transferred text mode. Filename "LaTeX.Installer.ftp.hqx". ***Installing Run the installer application and follow its directions. For more help, see the pdf file in this directory named LaTeXr5p0.booklet.pdf.hqx, which is the same as the LaTeX Installation Guide (pretty much). I've also included the same file in dvi format, for those who have Textures 1.8 or the DVIImport utility, inside the install package. ***Dealing with LaTeX2e: Please read the file "ben.latex.notes.tex" for help with graphics, color, fonts, making LaTeX faster, and other useful information. The format name and the name of the bulleted inputs folder must match. For example, if I decide to name my LaTeX format "george", I need to remember to name my inputs folder "Ągeorge", otherwise Textures won't find my inputs. If you don't have the AMS fonts either from the AMS (ftp://e-math.ams.org) or from us ($125 for PostScript versions of the fonts) then you'll need some metrics for cmmib6,7,8,9 and cmbsy6,7,8,9. Get the AMS fonts, or our fonts, or at least get the metrics from our ftp server or you'll hear no end of complaints. If you have problems, try checking our tech support web pages, at http://www.bluesky.com/techsupport/techhome.html Happy TeX-ing! Ben Salzberg ben@bluesky.com
